Tucson teen overcomes addiction through rehab program

Beating drug addiction is a difficult journey for many. Johnny Alcantar, 17, took part in that journey and succeeded.

Alcantar’s history with substance abuse began in sixth and seventh grades.

His experimentation with cocaine, spice and marijuana led to addiction and juvenile detention.

It also led to being introduced to Intermountain Centers’ Outpatient Summit Program.

Seventy percent of those who go through that program have successful outcomes.

That’s double the rate of people who check into a rehab program without follow-up care.

After going through the Intermountain Rehab program, patients are referred to the Zia Transitional Apartments where they receive additional care and guidance.

Alcantar, now a father, says he’s thankful and feels the Intermountain Rehab program has given him the strength he needs to conquer life.

“Being able to talk to someone when I needed it when I felt like when I was going to relapse when I felt like I was going to go back to my negative behaviors talking to staff and counselors over there really helped me and even talking to other peers helped me,” Alcantar said.

Therapist Narcie Chanell witnessed Alcantar’s transformation every step of the way.

“It’s been thrilling to see him grow change and evolve. He’s stable now with a job and a baby and we’re all really happy for him,” Chanell said.

Alcantar plans to attend his second semester at Pima Community College this fall. He hopes to become a medical technician.
